As National Stuttering Awareness Week wraps up, I’ve seen a lot of posts asking for people’s patience, understanding and general awareness of stuttering.
While this is a great message and it is very important to increase society’s awareness to our inexplicable problems, I want to remind my fellow stutterers (and others with a handicap) that this is YOUR story.
You write your own book, You are the captain of your ship, You are the master of your life.
Regardless of what society thinks or how people treat you or how much you’re ridiculed/bullied/teased – you have a choice. You have a choice to believe all that teasing as fact and feel inferior – or you can understand, accept & embrace your handicap as what makes you unique and live YOUR life.
Yes, it’s tough to look past people’s laughter and ridicule (trust me, I still go through it today), but you need to take personal responsibility for your life and live how you want – & not live your life based on others’ perceptions of you.
To my fellow stutterers and others with a handicap – keep being you.
