#TwitterSmarter Chat with Madalyn Sklar

By Juan V López @JuanVLopez · On November 16, 2017

I had the opportunity to be a guest on Madalyn Sklar’s #TwitterSmarter chat to talk about using trending information to grow your online clout. #TwitterSmarter is a weekly Twitter chat that reaches a million people weekly.

Madalyn & I connected online an article for Social Media Examiner on how to grow your Twitter following.

What a RUSH.

I literally fired off a few hundred Tweets in an hour – I felt like a traffic cop in Tokyo 😉

Truly had a blast with Madalyn & grateful for the opportunity to chat & share with her community!

Here’s a video chat Madalyn & I had after the #TwitterSmarter chat to expand on the topic:

And here’s a quick recap of some of the top Tweets from the chat:

Please welcome our guest @JuanVLopez. Topic: Tips For Creating An Engaging Twitter Presence. #TwitterSmarter pic.twitter.com/gxCsqNN4N3

— Madalyn Sklar 🚀 Speaker. Podcaster. Chat Host. (@MadalynSklar) November 16, 2017

Ask @hootsuite:

We invited our friends from Hootsuite to come on the chat and kick it off by answering one pressing question about Twitter marketing.

Ask @hootsuite: How can you design an effective Twitter marketing strategy? #TwitterSmarter pic.twitter.com/GR9E6FVNQE

— Madalyn Sklar 🚀 Speaker. Podcaster. Chat Host. (@MadalynSklar) November 16, 2017

1|4 Start by researching your competition. Gather information about your competitors’ strengths and weaknesses so you can be better. This blog post helps with how to do that: https://t.co/6zactPPIyL #TwitterSmarter pic.twitter.com/6Y0SoibGad

— Hootsuite (@hootsuite) 16 November 2017

2|4 Next, identify your target audience. Your brand can’t be all things to all people on Twitter—nor should you want it to be. Know who you’re targeting and craft a strategy that focuses on delivering real value to them 👍 #TwitterSmarter pic.twitter.com/Vya85MzDC7

— Hootsuite (@hootsuite) 16 November 2017

3|4 Also, make sure to integrate your Twitter strategy into your overall content strategy. It doesn’t make sense to have Twitter doing one thing and your other channels doing something completely different. Alignment is key! #TwitterSmarter pic.twitter.com/BXLLkCGVj7

— Hootsuite (@hootsuite) 16 November 2017

4|4 Phew! That was a lot of typing. If you’re looking to learn more about designing a Twitter marketing strategy check out this blog post https://t.co/5fNdWgcDn7 #TwitterSmarter pic.twitter.com/3ib38jWgBx

A7: Now that we have 280 characters, we can get super creative with our tweets. #TwitterSmarter https://t.co/W2a1l6AiMk

a7| Just being yourself, people that totally have the same humor will connect, those that won't, won't. #twittersmarter

A7: The biggest thing is to make sure, 100%, that it actually is relatable to your business. Do your research and make sure it ties back to the business and brand purpose. #TwitterSmarter https://t.co/HFAMHS9zRN

— Katelyn Brower 🌟 (@BrowerKDnB) November 16, 2017

A7: Know your brand tone & style, then only tackle trends & news that are applicable. Don't shoot in the dark. Brands wasted so, so much money on social war rooms during Oreo's "dunk in the dark" era. If something's relevant, go for it. If not, don't. #TwitterSmarter

— Jack Appleby (@JuiceboxCA) 16 November 2017

A7: "Dress them up" with your personality, your point of view, and talk about them in a way that relates to your audience #twittersmarter

— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) November 16, 2017

A7 – If you're keeping your thumb on the pulse of your industry, finding relevant news shouldn't be that hard. Creating original content surrounding said news/trends is fantastic. Could be a Tweet series, could be a blog post or an infographic. Many effective ways #TwitterSmarter

A7. A perfect example is the recent character change on Twitter from 140 to 280 characters. Lots of great blog posts, chats, live streaming shows on the topic. #TwitterSmarter

A7: be timely, especially if you want someone's attention or a specific audience, I'll often wait until I see that person/industry is recently tweeting. #TwitterSmarter

A7 Making topics funny and relatable to your business can be tricky. Not everyone does humor well. Remember the guy at the party who can't tell a joke. #TwitterSmarter

A7: Provide your insights to the news , Embed quotes within new posts , Convert news into another format (Giphy , video) and more and more and more #twittersmarter pic.twitter.com/JWWZ1B7nt6

A7. Spot trends that match the ed cal. Ran #ILookLikeAnEngineer series w/ our female tech team. Great publicity + morale booster #TwitterSmarter

— Su Doyle (@sudoyle) 16 November 2017

A7 if attending a trade show, see if they have a #hashtag, amazing how underutilized this is, you can build a quick community by engaging the audience that is active. #TwitterSmarter

A7: To quote my friend @melodylovesthis "Know thy customer before you snark."
Experiment. Notice any unfollows you get after commenting, respond to any negative replies. #TwitterSmarter https://t.co/zMdMqvbyd9

Q8: What are your top tips to engage hot Twitter trends across different social platforms? #TwitterSmarter pic.twitter.com/MaRvrc1up3

— Madalyn Sklar 🚀 Speaker. Podcaster. Chat Host. (@MadalynSklar) November 16, 2017

A8: Just bring it. Once you find the Twitter trends (keep your finger on the pulse of the Twitterverse), bring those to @instagram, @facebook & @Snapchat. People love trendy stuff & feeling "in the know."

Be alert 👀 Go quick 🏃🏽Bring value 💰 #TwitterSmarter https://t.co/xD9eBCaA6Z

A8: Listen. Engage. Rinse. Repeat. #TwitterSmarter https://t.co/uxD87nPUZW

— Madalyn Sklar 🚀 Speaker. Podcaster. Chat Host. (@MadalynSklar) November 16, 2017

A8 – Remember to ALWAYS be yourself! Stay authentic! It's great to jump on the "trends bandwagon," but it's NOT okay to do so if it goes against your beliefs and ethics. #TwitterSmarter https://t.co/unBWf8LCBn

— Joe Nielsen (@JoeNielsen10) November 16, 2017

A8: Theoretically, news-based Twitter trends could be relevant on other social platforms, but I'd never advise someone try to make IG or FB content based on a Twitter trend. Those networks have their own trends. #TwitterSmarter

— Jack Appleby (@JuiceboxCA) 16 November 2017

A8: Research and really find out about the trend. Engage in top performers of the trend and give your own insight and capitalise on it #twittersmarter

— Justin Bienvenue 📚 (@JustinBienvenue) 16 November 2017

A8. Consistency. Have a schedule and stick to it. #TwitterSmarter pic.twitter.com/1onaGIYv1a

A8 When using Twitter trends on other platforms, be sure to use that platform's style. There's nothing more irritating than seeing a tweet on Facebook or seeing a Facebook link on Twitter. #TwitterSmarter

— Jim Katzaman (@JKatzaman) November 16, 2017

A8. Create content based on the trends on different platforms. Make sure to make your content native to each platform! #TwitterSmarter https://t.co/91BslntaA4

A8: Use hashtags to keep the content consistent (but don't share the same exact post on all social media platforms) #twittersmarter
