I was in a minor car accident over the weekend with a motorcyclist.
As I was driving down a busy street, he turned into the street and drove straight into the right-hand side of my car.
My first reaction was, “God, please let this man be alright…” I got out of my car & ran back to check on him – he was OK, thank God. He got caught on my car for a bit before he disengaged & fell. He was perfectly fine, though, and his bike was OK, too.
After making sure he was alright, I gave him a piece of paper so he could write down his insurance information for me.
He seemed like a nice, older guy, & totally admitted that the accident was his fault and he’d pay for whatever I had to fix on my car. Luckily, the damage on my car was very minor (scratches on the right-hand side). Anyway, he wrote down his info for me, I gave him my insurance card so he could write down mine, and we went our separate ways – I didn’t call the police or anything, I was just happy he was OK.
So, on Monday morning, I tried all of the information he gave me & it was all phony. Every single bit of it. His insurance company, the agent, the phone numbers, the policy numbers … all phony.
Since it was my first car accident, I didn’t know what to do … plus, he seemed like a nice, older man, so I trusted the information he was giving me was accurate. I’m a very trusting person, so I didn’t even think to write down his license plates or actually look at his insurance card, since I had no reason to believe he was misleading me.
I could be mad that I have to pay for the damages, but in retrospect, I’m pretty fortunate that the damages are pretty minor & now I know to always verify the information before taking off from an accident. Could be worse smile emoticon
So, 2 key lessons to be learned from all of this:
1) Never trust a guy wearing Dodger blue (LOL).
2) If you’re in an accident, always verify the insurance information & cover your butt on the spot (don’t regret it later).
Hope this post helps someone who gets into a car accident & isn’t immediately sure what do to…
On that note, can anyone recommend a good body shop in northern Nevada to have look at my car?!
