I was talking to my 17-year-old brother and he was telling me how some of his teachers were putting doubts into his mind about going to college.
He said more and more of his teachers were telling students about rising student debt, the lack of a job market and how “a degree doesn’t mean what it used to”…
Man, I was so pissed off.
Yes, I agree that college is not a guaranteed path to success, but nothing in this world is. College is merely an avenue and a platform for people to interact with ideas, other intellectual people, get involved in something bigger than themselves, and start to learn what peaks their passions. A college setting is one of the only settings in the world where people are encouraged to freely make mistakes, challenge authority and not follow the status quo. You can find yourself and find people who will be in your life for the REST of your life in college.
Call me idealistic or call me crazy, but teachers shouldn’t be instilling fear and doubt and insecurities in young people.
Teachers should NOT be teaching young people to see limits & bounds.
Teachers should inspire possibility, they should ignite optimism, they should produce fearlesness!!!!
Yes, I agree that going to college is not a secure road, but for teachers to encourage kids NOT to go to college just baffles me…
I’m so glad I have good friends who are amazing teachers & mentors … so I know plenty of these leaders still exist out there. All of the great teachers out there, THANK YOU..
