These bad boys finally came in the mail yesterday. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t proud to have them, but I’d also be lying if I said they meant something to me.
The diplomas themselves don’t mean anything to me.
Yes, they’re a symbol of the required course work I had to complete, but they don’t represent the trials I endured, the sacrifices I made, the outside-the-classroom experiences I went through, the times I cried because of the overwhelming stress, the things I learned through my fraternity, the wonderful people I met, the expectations I exceeded, or the relationship with God I cultivated along the way.
These are things only I know and they’re what I’ll truly take away from my college experience. They define my time as an undergraduate and my path to who I am now. Not these diplomas.
But still, big congratulations to everyone who’s been fortunate enough to attain a degree in any field and good luck to those still on the journey to getting one. Knowledge is power.
Either way, I’m excited to mail these home to my dad so he can show them off in his living room. And hopefully within these next few years I’ll have a some master’s and doctorate’s diplomas to send home, too.
